Despite numerous surgeries, excruatiating pain, and endless rehab sessions, Ranel Cox has remained positive and optimistic. Ranel is an inspirational role model for everyone.
Here's his story:.
It was October, 18 2003 in Verde Valley, Arizona. The day started out normal like always at the track, woke up got my gear on and got ready for practice. When I went out for practice I let everyone get out ahead of me so that I could pace them. I was doing that, my laptimes, and my riding was really good, and I was really happy with how practice was going. Then, probably about the 4th lap of the practice I came up to the finish line jump and as soon as I hit the lip of the double I was upside down. I knew there was no saving it, but I stayed on the bike, and held on. As soon as the front wheel hit the ground the bike pile-drived me into the ground. I knew right away I was paralyzed, I didn’t try to move, I just layed there, and waited for the EMT. I didn’t know the impact it would have on my life at that time, but I definitely knew I was paralyzed. I got a helicopter ride from the track to Phoenix, had surgery that night, and it has been rehab ever since then.
How did you get started in Motocross?
My dad grew up racing motocross so when I was 4 and old enough to start riding my parents got me my first bike, and everything just took off from there.
What bike do you ride? I ride a KXF250. It has a hand brake, an electric shifter, and an automatic clutch.
Did you think you were going to ride again? Yeah I did think I would ride again. I thought I would walk again, and ride normally again. I didn’t think that I would be riding the way that I ride now, still being paralyzed, but I definitely always believed I would ride again.
When faced with such a life long obstacle you keep such a positive attitude on life. What keeps you motivated? I don’t think you have a choice in life but to be positive when something like this happens. If I wasn’t positive I would just be sitting on the couch, and never accomplishing anything. I still have dreams, still have goals for things I want to do on my dirtbike, and in order for me to accomplish those goals I have to be positive.
Biggest turn off in woman?
Biggest turn off in a woman is probably sluttyness, or lazyness, and just not taking care of themselves. Not pumped on a girl that doesn’t care what she looks like.
Top 3 Best days of your life: The first day I started riding again after I got paralyzed, the first time I won a race again after getting hurt, and the day I got invited to X-Games. I grew up watching X-Games, and it was such an honor to be invited to participate next to guys like Pastrana, Mirra, and Tony Hawk. I was pumped.
s I don’t need to, and sometimes it lands me in the hospital which keeps me off the bike and keeps me from practicing.
Explain your clothing company: My clothing company is Kill’em Clothing. The site is KillemClothing.com. I started it in 2006, and have been working on building it ever since. I try to keep it real to motocross, and out of the poser bro world, or malls. It’s important to me to make sure that I don’t let it get trendy, and sell it out for a buck.
How long after the accident did you ride again? I first rode on the year anniversary of my crash but it was sketchy, the bike didn’t have a hand brake or really any way for me to control it. I really started riding again, the way that I ride now, in March of 2006.
What was it like your first time back on a bike? It was awesome, I was just so pumped to be riding again, and out at the track doing laps with my buds! I was surprised how easy everything came back to me, it felt like if I could move my legs I would be able to go as fast as I ever did before I got hurt.
What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are to keep having fun riding my dirtbike! I have some goals, I want to podium at Extremity Games next weekend, medal at X-games in July, and I’d really like to land a backflip, or at least do it into the pit, and see how it goes. I just need someone with a good pit, and knows how to flip to give me the opportunity. Other than motocross, just going to finish up with school, and keep trying to build the clothing company.
I just want to add a thank you to everyone that has supported me in my adaptive motocross dreams! Adaptive Action Sports for getting us into the X-Games, ESPN for providing the platform, Carlos Serrano and everyone at Serrano Motorsports, the Sipe family for their constant support, my sponsors, O’neal, Dunlop, Utopia, Monster Energy, Live Adaptive, Gaerne, Acerbis, Rockwell Time, Globe Shoes, Renthal, Yoshimura, Decal Works, EVS, GoPro, Engine Ice, Works Connection, and SixSixOne and most of all My Dad, Mom, Sister Ralene, and the rest of my family for letting me follow my dreams, and being there for my in the good times, and the hard times when I am laying in the hospital bed. I couldn’t do anything without all of that support!
