I've always had a sort of obsession with the Egyptian princess Cleopatra, and after reading a few chapters in "If You Have to Cry, Go Outside And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You", by publicist Kelly Cutrone, I decided to look up some information on her and share it with all of you. After all, the ancient egyptian civilization was phenomenal and intelligent, from their language to their remedies. I have been there once for a family vacation and I insist that it should be on all of your "places to visit before I die" list.
Aside from the strict religious traditions, Egypt was truly a spiritual and mind blowing experience of culture.
Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BC and actually had an older sister named Cleopatra as well. She was only 18 years old when she inherited her fathers throne and became the queen of Egypt. Despite Hollywoods portrayal of her beauty, Cleopatra was actually rather average looking, but was known for being very intelligent and seductive. She married her 12 year old brother in compliance with the Egyptian hierarchy tradition. Her brother resented her power and had her exiled 3 years later. During this time Julius Caesar was vying for control of the Roman Empire. As Cleopatra gathered an army along the Egyptian Border, Caesar seized control of the Pharaoh's palace and demanded Cleopatra and her brother meet with him to settle their dispute. Cleopatra was smuggled into Egypt by hiding in an Oriental Rug, and it is said that the second she rolled out of it in front of Caesar, he became her lover that very night.
